That’s What’s Magic - Bob Lefsetz and Tom Dumont
Many of you probably know who Bob Lefsetz is, but for those that don’t, he writes a letter - pretty much whenever the mood strikes him - about the music industry. Well, more often than not it’s about the music industry (a letter a few days ago was about his car). Anyway. Week in and week out, people reply to his emails. Recently he wrote a letter about Lady GaGa and how Adele has sold more records than GaGa because Adele’s record is, well, better. That it’s about the music. Bob also sends out what he calls the “Mailbag,” which contains responses to his letter(s) that he thinks are interesting. Today’s Mailbag contained a response from Tom Dumont, the guitarist in No Doubt. Take a look:
Subject: Re: GaGaMania
This reminds me of a lesson I learned after becoming successful. I got to hang out with some rich people and I realized something which should obvious but it’s so elusive.
Money can buy you a nice house, or a great car…fancy clothes, amazing meals and vacations, maybe even a hot girlfriend.
But all the money in the world can’t write you a great song.
That’s what’s magic!
And one can apply that into the other corners of life. So I started to seek out all the other things which money also couldn’t buy.
Like kindness, honesty, riding a wave, or reading a book to my kid…
Etc etc.
Knowing this simple lesson makes life so much better.
Tom Dumont
Just thought I’d share this simple lesson with you all.
