I became a fan in earnest of Coldplay sometime between late 2007 and early 2008. Prior to that, I knew who they were and didn’t care either way about them.
My sister was a big fan since Parachutes came out. I was 11 and wasn’t really into what a lot of people say are “sensitive melodies.” Even now, my Coldplay is not about sensitive melodies (yes, I love Chris Martin’s falsetto, but I also love his voice on Yes just as much. Maybe more). It’s about far more than that, and while Moving To Mars surely has what some would call sensitive melodies, there’s more to it than that.
I find this song to be incredibly..everything. It’s nostalgic, and it’s hopeful, in a longing kind of way. ”We are meeting for the first time / We might never meet again, you and me / We are meeting for the first time, can’t you see / Seven, six, five, four, three.”
And no one’s definitely moving to Mars. It’s just a maybe. Maybe moving us to Mars. Like many things, it’s a maybe.
There’s something about this song just really hits me in all the right places. It’s a combination of everything. The buildups, the breakdowns, the low voice, the falsetto, the textures, the lyrics, the piano, the strings, the nostalgia, the longing, everything.
